Dr Rao is a senior Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with over two decades of experience. His clinical philosophy places the patient at the centre of care, ensuring each woman is informed, empowered, and actively involved in shared decision-making. He is known for providing reassuring guidance and support while communicating in clear, jargon-free language and always advocating for his patients’ best interests. Dr Rao is a highly skilled gynaecological surgeon accredited in advanced laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, vaginal, and open procedures. Dr Rao speaks 5 languages – English, Malay, Indonesian, Tamil & Telugu which come in handy during consultations in multicultural Australia. Dr Rao’s focus includes advanced minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, ensuring women benefit from the latest techniques that support faster recovery and improved outcomes. Across all aspects of his work, he prioritises personalised care that aligns with each patient’s values, preferences, and clinical needs. Dr Rao holds a public hospital appointment as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Women & Newborn Health Services in Western Australia, including Osborne Park Hospital and King Edward Memorial Hospital. In addition to his public role, he consults with private patients in his rooms, with surgical procedures performed at Hollywood Private Hospital.

 

Background & Training

Dr Rao completed his specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology across Australia, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia, and holds specialist qualifications including FRANZCOG (Australia), FRCOG (United Kingdom), and NSR O&G (Malaysia). Prior to relocating to Perth, he undertook three years of advanced training in gynaecology, laparoscopy, and cancer surgery, as well as one year of advanced obstetrics training in maternal–fetal medicine at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney. Originally from Malaysia, he completed his medical degree in Indonesia under the patronage of the Malaysian Prime Minister, graduating with an additional honours degree, before undertaking postgraduate training in England and Scotland through a British Council Sponsorship. In 2010, he was awarded the inaugural Australian Prime Minister’s Endeavour Award, which enabled him to pursue subspecialty training in Sydney and undertake doctoral research in Human Papilloma Virus at the University of New South Wales.
